Passion . . .

Have you ever been so passionate about something that it breaks your heart? For me its a couple of things, both to do with Africa.

I am passionate about bringing hope to those who have seen so much. Bringing joy to those who have endured more than we can ever imagine. In Canada we cannot comprehend what is going on in Africa. So what is it that affects me so deeply? Genocide and the abduction of children forced into military activity and the sex trade . . . otherwise known as child soldiers.

It is amazing the amount of genocide which has and continues to take place in Africa, and the involvement of child soldiers in these genocides. Places like Darfur where child soldiers continue to fight with the Janjaweed as they continue to carry out the genocide in Sudan. Or what about Uganda where children continue to walk to the city to sleep at night so that they will be safe from abduction. The DRC where LRA leader Joseph Kony continues to reside, training children for war. Or who can forget Rwanda, Kigali in particular where an estimated 800,000 people were violently killed . . . 90% of a people group wiped off the face of the earth.

These are all countries that have seen their share of genocide. These are all countries where child soldiers have been involved in the genocide. Some of these countries are still in a genocide.

The picture I have posted today was taken at the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, Rwanda. This is just one of the many mass graves where thousands of Rwandan's are buried, as a result of the genocide. For me personally, I found it really tough to walk through the memorial. I've read so much about this particular genocide and I was left speechless as I walk from grave to grave, knowing full well that there were children involved in the genocide as well.

So why am I writing about this? Just a reminder . . . just a reminder to us Canadian's who live in this blessed country to stop complaining about the petty things that bug us on a daily basis. Be thankful for all that you have . . . be thankful that we live in peace and your children live in a fairly safe society.

  1. When I think of the injustice done in thpose parts of the worl, I am reminded of Noah. Had he been born there, he would have not had a chance to live. Yes, Joel, we are so blessed. I am reminded of that more and more. It brings me such joy to see your heart for the unjust. God has done so much in your life, He is leading youand Laura, and we are excited to see where that will be. Love you, Mom
